Dress Code

We ask that your child be properly attired for class.  All children should wear comfortable, loose clothing such as skorts, shorts, t-shirts, etc…   It is important that your knees are visible for class.  In colder weather, shorts can be worn underneath sweats that can be removed once the dancer is warmed up.  Hair should be pulled back out of the face.

We ask that no short shorts, spaghetti strap tank tops, bare midriffs, or other revealing clothing be worn. We seek to dress modestly in our classes and we ask that you use your best discretion to that end.

All children should wear socks and the traditional Irish gillies or ballet slippers.  New students may wear just socks until proper foot attire can be purchased.  The floor of the studio is unfinished wood and it is wise to have some type of foot wear.

              FAQs

-When does the dance year normally start and end?

In Irish Dance Schools, there is no beginning or end.  We hold classes year round with a small break over Christmas.

-Will my child have to do performances or recitals?

All performances and recitals at the dance school are absolutely 100% voluntary.  You will be notified of upcoming performance opportunities via the Studio bulletin board and only those dancers interested in participating will sign-up at that time.  We typically do not have a yearly recital although sometimes we have held smaller in-class recitals for family and friends.  Once again, these recitals are voluntary.

-Will my child have to buy a costume for the performances or recitals?

Yes.  If your child chooses to perform in any show or recital they will be asked to be in the school mandated costume.  Beginner girl costumes are, on average, $75.  Beginner boy costumes are, on average, $50.  Beginner adult costumes are, on average, $110.  The same costumes are used indefinitely.  More detailed costuming information is available via the Parent Handbook made accessible to all registered members of the dance school.

-Does my child have to do competitions?

The Irish Dance World is built around the competitive circuit; however, unlike most other schools we leave it up to the families to choose whether or not their children will compete.  We train all of our dancers as though they will be competing on the competitive circuit; however, we do not ask or expect anyone to participate in competitions unless they desire to do so.

-If my child starts in the middle of the year, won't she / he be behind everybody else?

Yes.  However, everyone has had the same experience.  Everyone starts in a Beginner class at whatever time they choose and at first, they are the only ones in the class who know nothing.  They are brought up to speed with the steps (normally by a teacher's assistant) and are soon able to keep up with the rest of the class.  In a couple of weeks or months, another new beginner will start and your child will no longer be the new one in class anymore.

-How does my child move up into different levels?

Tir Na Nog dancers typically stay in that class until they turn 8 years old at which time, they move into the regular Beginner class.  Beginner dancers typically stay in Beginner for at least a year before moving up.  After that, if your child chooses to compete, how they place in competition will decide when they are ready to move up.  If your child does not choose to compete, we will move that child up when we think they are ready.  It is important to note that we do move people up early out of Tir Na Nog and / or Beginner if they are catching on very quickly (this is especially true of Beginners who start at an older age.)

-Can parents stay to watch the class?

We do allow parents to stay during class if they prefer to do so; however, we have only a very small waiting area in the hallway.  Parents may look through the door to watch their children, but should stay off the dance floor and stage area to avoid distracting the students.  We have a small play area for younger siblings, but we expect parents to care for their younger children and be sure the area is clean before leaving.

-I'm an adult interested in taking the adult class.  Do all of these questions and answers apply to me as well?

Yes.  The adult classes are run in the same way as the classes for children except that the training is not necessarily as aggressive as the regular beginner classes.  The adults also have the option to perform and compete and are also moved up through the different levels in the same way that the children do.
